The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, announced that Abdullahi Mair – a former refugee and journalist who has advocated for the right to education by putting 100,000 books into the hands of refugee children in Kenya – will be the 2023 UNICEF Nansen Refugee Global Laureate. Born in Somalia, Mire grew up in the Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya. He eventually settled in Norway, but a desire to serve his community drew him back. She found work as a journalist in Kenya and founded the refugee-led organization Refugee Youth Education Hublink Bahri, which has opened three libraries in the camps – stocked with donated books – and provided learning opportunities to thousands of displaced children.
