On 24 October 2023, the European Union (EU) and India conducted their first joint naval exercise in the Gulf of Guinea. The exercise took place after the 3rd meeting of the EU-India Maritime Security Dialogue in Brussels on 5 Oct 23. During the exercise, Indian Navy's INS Sumedha, an offshore patrol ship, engaged ships of three EU member states in the Gulf of Guinea. Joined: Italian Navy ship ITS Foscari, French Navy ship FS Ventos, and Spanish Navy ship Tornado. The four ships practiced a series of tactical maneuvers in international waters off the coast of Ghana, which included boarding exercises, flying exercises using helicopters mounted on the French ship Ventos and Indian Navy ship Sumedha and transfer of personnel between ships .
