GRSE Signs USD 62.44 Million Deal with German Firm for Hybrid Multi-Purpose Vessels.

In September 2025, Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE) signed a USD 62.44 Million contract with Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler und Reederei GmbH & Co., Hamburg, Germany for the construction of four Hybrid Multi-Purpose Vessels (MPVs), along with provision for two additional propulsion vessels, strengthening GRSE’s international commercial shipbuilding footprint.
- The agreement was signed by Commander (Cdr) Shantanu Bose (Retd), Director (Shipbuilding), GRSE, and Thomas Rehder, Managing Director, Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler und Reederei, formalizing the collaboration between the Indian shipyard and the German company.
- GRSE commenced steel cutting for the CORAL 7500 DWT MPV series in April 2025, marking its first major international export order in the commercial vessel segment.
- The multi-purpose vessel programme began with an initial four-vessel contract in June 2024, followed by additional orders in September 2024, December 2024, and March 2025, bringing the total order to eight vessels.
Main Point :- (i) The vessels are 120 metres long and 17 metres wide, featuring battery-assisted hybrid propulsion, improved fuel efficiency, and flexible cargo handling systems, designed to meet International Maritime Organization (IMO) decarbonization targets.
(ii) A notable design feature is the vessels’ capability to transport multiple large wind turbine blades on deck, catering to the emerging logistics requirements of the renewable energy sector.
(iii) This deal builds upon GRSE’s ongoing construction of the 7,500 DWT MPV at Kolkata, West Bengal, reinforcing its commercial export capabilities and positioning the company as a competitive player in hybrid, fuel-efficient, and environmentally compliant vessels for global markets.
