World Bamboo Day was observed across the globe on 18 September 2025, marking its 17th edition. The day promotes awareness of bamboo’s environmental, cultural, and economic importance, while also encouraging sustainable use and investment in bamboo-based industries.
- World Bamboo Day was first established in 2009 during the 8th World Bamboo Congress (WBC) held in Bangkok, Thailand, by the World Bamboo Organisation (WBO).
- The first celebration was also held on 18 September 2009 in Bangkok under the leadership of Kamesh Salam from Assam, who served as WBO President from 2007 to 2009.
- Since its inception, World Bamboo Congresses have played a vital role in global bamboo advocacy. The 12th WBC was held in Taiwan under the aegis of the United States of America (USA), while the 13th WBC is scheduled for 2026, continuing international collaboration on bamboo development.
Main Point :- (i) In India, the Northeast Bamboo Conclave 2025 was organised on 9 September 2025 in Guwahati, Assam. The conclave discussed a roadmap for a sustainable bamboo economy in the Northeast region and highlighted opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship.
(ii) The theme for World Bamboo Day 2025 was “Promoting Investments, CSR, and Bio-Economy”, aligning with global efforts to integrate bamboo into sustainable business models and community development initiatives.
