The United Nations (UN) observed the 6th International Equal Pay Day on 18 September 2025, highlighting the global commitment to achieving equal pay for work of equal value and addressing persistent gender pay gaps across nations.
- International Equal Pay Day was initiated in 2019 during the 41st session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, Switzerland.
- The proposal came from Iceland, a steering committee member of the Equal Pay International Coalition (EPIC), along with core members Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Panama, South Africa, and Switzerland.
Main Point :- (i) On 18 December 2019, the UN General Assembly (UNGA) adopted resolution A/RES/74/142, formally proclaiming 18 September every year as International Equal Pay Day to reinforce global advocacy on wage equality.
(ii) The first observance of International Equal Pay Day took place on 18 September 2020, establishing a global platform to monitor progress and mobilize joint actions towards eliminating pay discrimination worldwide.
(iii) By 2025, the day had grown into a significant UN initiative, aligning with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8.5, which seeks equal pay for equal work by 2030, reflecting the urgency to address wage disparities.
