WIPO’s Global Innovation Index (GII) 2025: India Ranked 38th, Switzerland Tops for 15th Consecutive Year.

In September 2025, the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), in collaboration with the Portulans Institute (PI), released the 18th edition of the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2025: Innovation at a Crossroads. India ranked 38th globally with a score of 38.1, while Switzerland topped the index for the 15th year in a row.
- India moved to the 38th rank in 2025 (up from 39th in 2024) with an overall score of 38.1, marking major progress compared to its 81st position in 2015.
- Switzerland retained 1st position with a score of 66.0 for the 15th consecutive year. Sweden and the United States of America (USA) secured the 2nd and 3rd spots for the 3rd consecutive year.
- The Global Innovation Index (GII), launched in 2007 by INSEAD, Cornell University, and WIPO, ranks 139 economies based on 80 innovation indicators covering R&D spending, venture capital, high-tech exports, and IP filings.
Main Point :- (i) The United Kingdom (UK) ranked 6th with a score of 59.1, followed by Finland (7th, 57.7), Netherlands (8th, 57.0), and Denmark (9th, 56.9). China entered the top 10 for the first time, ranking 10th with 56.6.
(ii) Five Sub-Saharan African countries debuted in the GII: Seychelles (75th), Malawi (125th), Lesotho (132nd), Guinea (133rd), and Congo (137th).
(iii) India ranked 1st among the 37 Lower-Middle-Income (LMI) countries and top in the Central & Southern Asia region. Notably, Bengaluru, Karnataka (21st), Delhi (28th), and Chennai, Tamil Nadu (84th) were listed among the Top 100 Science & Technology Clusters globally.
