UN Observed 6th International Day to Protect Education from Attack, 2025.

The United Nations (UN) observed the 6th International Day to Protect Education from Attack on 9 September 2025, raising awareness on safeguarding education in conflict zones.


      - The UN General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed 9 September as the International Day to Protect Education from Attack through resolution A/RES/74/275, adopted on 28 May 2020, led by Qatar and co-sponsored by 62 countries.

      - The day was first observed on 9 September 2020. Annual observances are facilitated by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and UNICEF (United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund).

      - According to the 2025 Annual Report on Children and Armed Conflict (CAAC), there was a 44% rise in attacks against schools in 2024 compared to the previous year, with grave violations like rape (+134%) and child victims of severe violations (+71%).

Main Point :-   (i) The highest cases were reported in Israel & the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Somalia, Nigeria, and Haiti. Over 28,000 students, teachers, and academics were affected by violence globally.

      (ii) To mark the day, UNESCO and UNICEF hosted a high-level event in Geneva, Switzerland, themed “Challenging narratives, reshaping action”. A dedicated exhibition “Reshaping Action” and a youth debate hosted by Qatar also took place at Palais des Nations, Geneva.

(iii) The year marked 25 years of the Optional Protocol on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict (OPAC) banning child recruitment, and 20 years of UNSC Resolution 1612 (2005) monitoring child rights violations in conflict.
