UNESCO’s International Literacy Day 2025 Observed Globally on 8th September.

On 8 September 2025, International Literacy Day (ILD) was observed worldwide under the leadership of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization). The theme was “Promoting Literacy in the Digital Era.”


      - International Literacy Day was first proposed at the World Congress of Ministers of Education, Tehran (1965) and officially proclaimed by the UNESCO General Conference, Paris (1966).

      - The first observance took place on 8 September 1967.

     

Main Point :-   (i) In 2025, UNESCO hosted a global event and conference at its Headquarters in Paris, France, which included high-level panels and the International Literacy Prizes ceremony.

      (ii) In India, the celebration was organised by DOSEL (Department of School Education & Literacy), MoE (Ministry of Education) at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi, where MoS Jayant Chaudhary addressed the gathering.

(iii) Himachal Pradesh became the fourth Indian state to achieve full functional literacy, while the ULLAS Literacy Week 2025 (1–8 Sept) was launched nationwide to mobilise volunteers, register non-literates, and engage neo-learners.
