India’s Literacy Rate Surges from 74% in 2011 to 80.9% in 2023–24.

In his address on International Literacy Day 2025, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan highlighted a significant improvement in India’s literacy landscape: the national literacy rate climbed from 74% in 2011 to 80.9% in 2023–24, marking notable progress in foundational education.

      - The government’s flagship literacy mission has enrolled over 3 crore learners and 42 lakh volunteers, emphasizing its scale and outreach.

      - The programme now offers learning materials across 26 Indian languages, increasing accessibility and cultural inclusivity.

Main Point :-   (i) A leap of 6.9 percentage points in just 13 years—from 74% (2011) to 80.9% (2023–24)—demonstrates strong foundational learning gains.

      (ii) Out of learners enrolled, approximately 1.83 crore undertook foundational literacy and numeracy assessments, achieving an impressive 90% success rate.

(iii) Several states and UTs—Ladakh, Mizoram, Goa, Tripura, and Himachal Pradesh—have attained full functional literacy, marking milestone achievements in regional education.
