Gangtok Ranked 5th Safest City for Women in India in NARI 2025 Report.

On August 30, 2025, Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, was ranked as the 5th safest city for women in India, according to the National Annual Report & Index on Women's Safety (NARI) 2025, released by the National Commission for Women (NCW). The city achieved an impressive safety score of 70.4%, surpassing the national benchmark of 65%.
- The NARI 2025 report surveyed over 12,000 women across 31 cities, assessing factors such as infrastructure, harassment incidence and reporting, workplace security, trust in authorities, and perceptions of safety during day and night. Gangtok's high ranking reflects its commitment to creating a secure environment for women.
- Key initiatives contributing to Gangtok's safety include the establishment of the Sikkim State Commission for Women, which has been instrumental in advocating for women's rights and welfare.
Main Point :- (i) Under the leadership of Chairperson Teny Doma Bhutia, the Commission has engaged with officials to strengthen ties with the Chief Secretary and Police Director General, focusing on improving complaint response and policy implementation.
(ii) Additionally, the Gangtok District Administration, led by District Collector Tushar G. Nikhare, has implemented the "Mother Pods" initiative. These are secure spaces in public areas where mothers can comfortably breastfeed their infants, promoting both safety and convenience for women in the city.
(iii) Gangtok's proactive approach to women's safety serves as a model for other cities, demonstrating the effectiveness of community-driven efforts and responsive governance in creating safer urban environments for women.
