India has been elected as the Chairman of the Executive Board of the Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD) after securing the highest number of votes during the 23rd AIBD General Conference, which was held from August 19 to 21, 2025, in Phuket, Thailand.
- India’s election as Chairman of the AIBD Executive Board marks a significant achievement in global media cooperation, as the country already holds the position of President of the AIBD General Conference since 2022. This dual leadership role highlights India’s growing influence in media diplomacy and international broadcasting development.
- The 23rd AIBD General Conference and Associated Meetings were chaired by Gaurav Dwivedi, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Prasar Bharati, India’s Public Service Broadcaster.
- The theme for the 2025 General Conference was “Media for People, Peace & Prosperity,” focusing on inclusive and responsible media practices to strengthen regional and global cooperation.
Main Point :- (i) The event witnessed participation from 92 member organizations representing 45 countries, including 26 Government Members, 48 national broadcasters, and 44 affiliate organizations. Delegates from Asia-Pacific countries, along with representation from Africa, Europe, and North America, discussed strategies for media development and policy exchange.
(ii) The Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, operates under the auspices of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). It serves as an intergovernmental organization that promotes vibrant, cooperative media environments through training, capacity building, and resource sharing.
(iii) India’s role at the AIBD has been strengthened by Prasar Bharati’s proactive involvement in fostering media cooperation across borders. With Gaurav Dwivedi representing India, this leadership position will enable the country to enhance South-South cooperation, empower public broadcasters, and promote balanced global narratives through sustainable media practices.
