Nagasaki Day is annually observed on 9 August to commemorate the 1945 atomic bombing of Nagasaki, Japan, by the United States of America (USA) during World War II (1939-1945). The 2025 observance marks the 80th anniversary of this tragic event, promoting peace and remembrance.
- The atomic bombing of Nagasaki took place on 9 August 1945, just three days after the bombing of Hiroshima. This devastating act by the USA led to massive destruction and loss of life, ultimately contributing to Japan's surrender and the end of World War II.
- The inaugural Nagasaki Day ceremony was held on 9 August 1947, organised by the Government of Japan. The objective was to honour the victims of the atomic bombing and to promote the ideals of lasting peace across the world.
- Every year, memorial services are held at the Peace Statue Plaza in Nagasaki Peace Park, Japan. This site features a 10-metre-tall bronze Peace Statue, which stands as a symbol of hope, remembrance, and the global call for the abolition of nuclear weapons.
Main Point :- (i) The Nagasaki Peace Park serves as a central location for peace-related Aevents and remembrance gatherings. Visitors and dignitaries from across the world participate in the annual observance, reflecting on the consequences of war and reaffirming their commitment to peace.
(ii) From 11 July to 17 August 2025, the United Nations University (UNU) in Tokyo hosted the "Exhibition for Peace: 80 Years Since the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Atomic Bombings." This exhibition showcased historical records, survivor testimonies, and educational displays to spread awareness about the horrors of nuclear warfare.
