MHI Launches Online Portal under SPMEPCI to Boost Electric Vehicle Manufacturing in India.

App and Web Portal

The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), Government of India (GoI), on 24th June 2025 launched the official online application portal for the Scheme to Promote Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India (SPMEPCI). The scheme targets to attract global electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers, boost local production capabilities, and transform India into a competitive global hub for electric car production.

      - The initiative aligns with India’s strategic goals under the ‘Make in India’ and ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) missions and contributes directly to the national target of achieving Net Zero carbon emissions by 2070.

      - The portal was jointly launched by Union Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy (Ministry of Heavy Industries & Steel), in the presence of Shri Kamran Rizvi (Secretary, MoHI) and Dr. Hanif Qureshi (Additional Secretary, MoHI) during an official ceremony in New Delhi.

      - The application window for the scheme became active from 24th June 2025 and will remain open for submissions until 21st October 2025 via the official portal: spmepci.heavyindustries.gov.in.

Main Point :-   (I) The SPMEPCI scheme seeks to drive large-scale domestic manufacturing of electric passenger vehicles, incentivize global EV giants to set up manufacturing facilities in India, generate employment opportunities, and enhance domestic technological capacity in the electric mobility sector.

(ii) The scheme requires a minimum investment of ₹4,150 crore from approved applicants within a maximum of 3 years from the date of approval by MHI, ensuring long-term industrial commitment.

(iii) To strengthen local supply chains, the scheme mandates Domestic Value Addition (DVA) benchmarks, promoting indigenous manufacturing capabilities for key EV components.
