Goa’s Heritage Drink Feni Secures Geographical Indication (GI) Tag Status.

In June 2025, Goa’s traditional liquor Ozzo Feni received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the Geographical Indication Registry (GIR) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, which functions under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), Government of India.


      - Ozzo Feni, crafted by Cazcar Distillery located in Nanora village near Panaji, Goa, is now the first-ever Feni variant in India to be granted a GI tag, marking a historic moment for Goa’s cultural and alcoholic heritage.

     

     

Main Point :-   (i) This GI recognition elevates Feni’s international status, putting it on par with iconic spirits such as Scotch from Scotland and Champagne from France.

      (ii) Feni is a heritage Indian spirit known for its strong Goan identity, first introduced by Portuguese missionaries who brought the cashew plant to Goa in the 1600s.

(iii) It is produced through fermentation and double distillation of either cashew apples or coconut sap, maintaining its artisanal legacy and geographical authenticity.
