In June 2025, former Zambian President Edgar Chagwa Lungu passed away at the age of 68 in Pretoria, South Africa. He was born on November 11, 1956, in Ndola, Zambia.


      - Lungu served as the 6th President of Zambia from 2015 to 2021. He first assumed office following a by-election in 2015 after the death of President Michael Sata, and secured a full term in 2016.

      - Beginning his political journey in the early 2000s, Lungu joined the Patriotic Front (PF) and held key positions such as Minister of Justice and Minister of Defence before becoming President.

      - After losing the 2021 election to Hakainde Hichilema, Lungu retired from politics and focused on philanthropy through the Edgar Lungu Foundation.

Main Point :-   (i) In 2023, Lungu returned to politics and was appointed chairperson and presidential candidate of the opposition Tonse Alliance, aiming for the 2026 elections.

      (ii) In December 2024, Zambia’s Constitutional Court disqualified Lungu from contesting future elections, stating his initial 2015–2016 term counted as a full term, thus breaching the two-term constitutional limit.
