IIT Madras and GRID-INDIA Join Hands to Strengthen Tanzania’s Power Grid Infrastructure.

MOUs and Agreement

In May 2025, the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Grid Controller of India Limited (GRID-INDIA), a Miniratna company under the Ministry of Power (MoP) headquartered in New Delhi, to enhance the electrical grid infrastructure of Tanzania.

      - The MoU was formally signed at the IIT Madras campus by Prof. Manu Santhanam, Dean of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research at IIT Madras, and Surajit Banerjee, Executive Director (HR) at GRID-INDIA.

      - This strategic collaboration is anchored at IIT Madras Zanzibar, the institute’s international campus in Tanzania, and is spearheaded by The Energy Consortium—a dedicated centre of excellence focused on clean energy innovations.

Main Point :-   (i) The collaboration aims to empower Tanzanian professionals by offering certification programs in key areas such as power systems, renewable energy, and energy management. In addition, hands-on training sessions will be conducted on specialized topics like power system protection, incorporating real-world case studies to ensure practical understanding and skill development.

(ii) IIT Madras and GRID-INDIA will engage in collaborative research focused on emerging technologies such as microgrids, data analytics, and artificial intelligence. These research efforts are designed to address Tanzania’s specific power sector challenges, promoting innovation and sustainable energy solutions tailored to the region’s needs.v

(iii) As part of the partnership, technical consultation will be provided to enhance the resilience, reliability, and overall efficiency of Tanzania’s electrical grid. The goal is to offer practical, implementable solutions that contribute to the long-term development and modernization of the country’s energy infrastructure.
