The United Nations (UN) annually observes the International Day for the Fight Against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing on 5 June, drawing global attention to the critical challenges posed by IUU fishing that jeopardize sustainable fisheries.


      - On 5 June 2025, the world will mark the 8th edition of this observance, organized by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

     

     

Main Point :-   (i) In December 2017, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted resolution A/RES/72/72, formally designating 5 June as the International Day for the Fight Against IUU Fishing.

      (ii) That same resolution also declared 2022 as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture, highlighting the efforts of small-scale fishers who account for 90% of the global fisheries workforce.

(iii) The inaugural celebration of the International Day for the Fight Against IUU Fishing took place on 5 June 2018.
