Karol Nawrocki Becomes New President of Poland.

In June 2025, Poland’s National Electoral Commission (NEC) announced that Karol Nawrocki, a nationalist conservative and opposition-backed candidate, won the second round of Poland’s presidential election with 50.89% of the votes. He narrowly defeated Rafał Trzaskowski, the liberal Mayor of Warsaw, who secured 49.11%.
- Karol Nawrocki will succeed the current President Andrzej Duda of the Law and Justice Party (PiS), whose term ends on 6 August 2025. Nawrocki’s election marks a shift in political leadership in Poland.
- Karol Nawrocki, born on 3 March 1983, is a historian, former Chairman of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), and an amateur boxer. He is widely known for his conservative views and focus on national identity.
- Nawrocki campaigned under the slogan “Poland First, Poles First,” promising to prioritize Polish citizens in social and economic policies over foreign nationals. His campaign emphasized national pride and traditional values.
Main Point :- (i) As President, Nawrocki will hold veto power over legislation. He has pledged to block key reforms proposed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s centrist coalition government, signaling potential political tensions ahead.
(ii) In his professional career, Nawrocki began working at the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN) in 2009, later heading the Public Education Office in Gdańsk (2013–2017). He was appointed President of IPN in July 2021, focusing on 20th-century Polish history.
(iii) From 2017 to 2021, he also served as Director of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk, where he reshaped exhibitions to emphasize Polish suffering and heroism during WWII. He has been honored with the Bronze Cross of Merit (2016) and Silver Cross of Merit (2021) for his contributions.
