Dr. Jitendra Singh Unveils ‘Bharat Gen’ Initiative at BharatGen Summit.
Summit Conference
On June 2, 2025, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Dr. Jitendra Singh, Ministry of Science & Technology, launched 'Bharat Gen' at the BharatGen Summit in New Delhi. This groundbreaking initiative introduces India’s first indigenously developed, government-funded, AI-based Multimodal Large Language Model (LLM), designed to support 22 Indian languages, promoting inclusive and culturally rooted AI development.
- The BharatGen Summit 2025 marked India's largest event on Generative AI and Large Language Models. It was organized by the Department of Science & Technology (DST) and IIT Bombay’s Technology Innovation Hub (TIH). A major highlight of the summit was the Generative AI Hackathon 2025, which encouraged students to create AI solutions addressing real-world problems, boosting youth engagement in AI innovation.
- Bharat Gen was developed under the National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS) and is implemented by the TIH Foundation for IoT and IoE at IIT Bombay. The initiative is backed by DST and involves a consortium of premier academic institutions, researchers, and innovators working collaboratively to strengthen India’s AI capabilities.
- Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, BharatGen promotes interdisciplinary learning, blending humanities, technology, and engineering. The initiative embodies a holistic education approach, preparing India’s workforce for a tech-driven future while respecting the nation’s linguistic and cultural diversity.
Main Point :- (i) BharatGen is poised to revolutionize key sectors including healthcare, education, agriculture, and governance. By offering region-specific, language-inclusive AI solutions, it ensures equitable technological growth and empowers underserved regions of India, aligning with the government’s broader digital empowerment goals.
(ii) The BharatGen initiative is supported by a network of 25 Technology Innovation Hubs (TIHs), including four upgraded Technology Translational Research Parks (TTRPs). The mission is driven by four foundational pillars: technology development, entrepreneurship, human resource development (HRD), and international collaboration, fostering a robust and sustainable AI ecosystem.
(iii) A notable component of BharatGen is the launch of the ‘Bharat Data Sagar’ project—an extensive multilingual AI data repository aimed at capturing India’s unique linguistic expressions, which are often underrepresented in global AI models. The broader BharatGen initiative was originally launched by the Government of India on September 30, 2024, symbolizing India’s commitment to building an inclusive and innovation-driven AI future.
