International Sex Workers’ Day 2025 Observed on June 2 to Acknowledge Rights and Struggles of Sex Workers Globally.
Important Days
International Sex Workers' Day, also known as International Whores' Day, is observed annually on 2nd June to honour sex workers worldwide, raise awareness about their rights, and protest against the criminalization, police harassment, and unsafe working conditions they often face.
- The year 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of International Sex Workers' Day.
- This milestone is observed under the theme "Access to Justice", led by the Global Network of Sex Work Projects (NSWP), a UK-based not-for-profit private company. The theme highlights the urgent need to ensure equal legal rights, safety, and protections for sex workers globally.
Main Point :- (i) The observance began on 2nd June 1975, when over 100 sex workers in Lyon, France, occupied Saint-Nizier Church to protest police brutality, fines, and inaction on violence against them.
(ii) The protest lasted for 8 days and ignited a global movement for sex workers’ rights and dignity.
(iii) Since then, June 2 has been globally recognized as a day of advocacy and remembrance for the struggles faced by sex workers.
