India and Mongolia Conduct 17th Edition of Joint Military Exercise 'Nomadic Elephant 2025' in Ulaanbaatar.

Exercise NOMADIC ELEPHANT 2025, the 17th edition of the annual bilateral military exercise between India and Mongolia, commenced on May 31, 2025, at the Special Forces Training Centre in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, and will conclude on June 13, 2025. The exercise highlights strategic defense cooperation between the two nations.
- The primary objective of the exercise is to enhance interoperability, coordination, and combat readiness of the participating forces by conducting joint tactical training and promoting the exchange of operational experience in counter-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations under UN peacekeeping scenarios.
- The 16th edition of Exercise NOMADIC ELEPHANT was held in July 2024 at Umroi, Meghalaya (India), showcasing the tradition of alternating host countries each year since the exercise's inception in 2004.
- The inaugural ceremony witnessed participation of key dignitaries including India’s Ambassador to Mongolia, Atul Malhari Gotsurve, and Major General Lkhagvasuren Ganselem from the Mongolian Armed Forces, reflecting the importance of the bilateral defense ties.
Main Point :- (i) The Indian Army contingent includes 45 personnel, mainly from the ARUNACHAL SCOUTS, a specialized unit deployed in high-altitude and sensitive border areas. The Mongolian contingent, with 150 personnel, represents an equivalent strength and shares similar operational focus and terrain expertise.
(ii) The scope of the exercise encompasses a Platoon-level Field Training Exercise (FTX), covering a wide range of activities like endurance training, reflex shooting, room intervention drills, small team tactics, rock craft training, and importantly, includes Cyber Warfare training modules for the first time, reflecting the evolving modern threat landscape.
(iii) Exercise NOMADIC ELEPHANT, launched in 2004, is a symbol of the deepening strategic partnership between India and Mongolia. It plays a vital role in fostering regional peace, stability, and mutual military cooperation, while also strengthening bilateral relations and defense diplomacy in the Indo-Pacific region.
