Luis Montenegro Reinstated as Prime Minister of Portugal.

Appointment

On May 29, 2025, Luis Filipe Montenegro Cardoso de Morais Esteves, leader of the Democratic Alliance (AD) Party, was appointed as the Prime Minister (PM) of Portugal following the legislative elections held on May 18, 2025.


      - The AD party secured 91 seats in the 230-member legislature in the election.

      - Luis will form the government in coalition with Chega, a national conservative party in Portugal, which secured 60 seats, and the Socialist Party (PS), which secured 58 seats.

     

Main Point :-   (i) Luis Filipe Montenegro Cardoso de Morais Esteves is a lawyer and seasoned politician. He began his political journey in 2002 when he was elected to the Portuguese Parliament representing Aveiro. He was successfully re-elected in four consecutive legislative elections — 2005, 2009, 2011, and 2015 — and served as a Member of Parliament until 2018.

      (ii) In 2011, Luis Montenegro rose to prominence within the Social Democratic Party (SDP) when he was appointed as the leader of its Parliamentary Group, a position he held until 2017. His leadership during this period was marked by active engagement in legislative matters and party affairs.

(iii) Continuing his political ascent, Luis Montenegro became the President of the Social Democratic Party in 2022. He was first appointed as the Prime Minister of Portugal in April 2024, marking a significant milestone in his political career.
