International Everest Day is observed annually on May 29 to commemorate the first successful ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 by Sir Edmund Hillary of New Zealand and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa of Nepal.


      - May 29, 2025, marks the 72nd anniversary of the historic Everest summit.

      - Nepal officially declared May 29 as International Everest Day in 2008, following the passing of Sir Edmund Hillary.

      - Mount Everest, situated in the Himalayas on the Nepal-Tibet border, is the world’s highest mountain, standing at 8,848.86 meters (29,031.7 feet), as per a 2020 Nepal-China joint survey.

Main Point :-   (i) The mountain is known as “Sagarmatha” in Nepali (Goddess of the Sky) and “Chomolungma” in Tibetan (Mother Goddess of the World).

      (ii) Everest was named in 1865 by the Royal Geographical Society (RGS) after Sir George Everest, former Surveyor General of India.

(iii) The Everest Summiteers Summit 2025 was held in Kathmandu, bringing together over 175 Everest climbers, and the 2025 Everest Marathon took place on May 29, starting from the Mt. Everest Base Camp and following the Sherpa trails of Khumbu Valley.
