The International Day of United Nations (UN) Peacekeepers is observed globally every year on May 29 to recognize the professionalism, dedication, and bravery of the personnel serving in UN peacekeeping operations, and to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives in the pursuit of peace.


      - May 29, 2025, marks the 77th anniversary of UN Peacekeeping missions.

      - The theme for 2025, "The Future of the Peacekeeping," highlights the importance of adopting flexible and innovative strategies to effectively tackle modern-day challenges in peacekeeping operations.

      - The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/57/129 in 2002, officially designating May 29 as the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

Main Point :-   (i) The first UN peacekeeping mission, UNTSO (United Nations Truce Supervision Organization), was launched in Palestine on May 29, 1948.

      (ii) The first observance of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers took place on May 29, 2003.

(iii) India is the 4th largest contributor of uniformed personnel to UN peacekeeping forces, with over 5,300 military and police personnel currently serving in missions, including those in Abyei and the Central African Republic.
