WMO Report 2025-29 Predicts Global Temperatures May Surpass 1.5°C Threshold Within Next 5 Years.

International

On May 28, 2025, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, released its Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update (2025–2029). The report highlights a strong probability that global temperatures could temporarily exceed the 1.5°C threshold above pre-industrial levels (1850–1900) within the next five years, intensifying the call for urgent and unified climate action.

      - Between 2025 and 2029, the average global near-surface temperature is projected to be 1.2°C to 1.9°C higher than the 1850–1900 baseline.

      - There is an 80% probability that at least one year within this five-year span will surpass 2024 to become the warmest year ever recorded.

Main Point :-   (i) The current central estimate for the 20-year average warming from 2015 to 2034 is 1.44°C, with a 90% confidence interval ranging from 1.22°C to 1.54°C.

(ii) This report emphasizes the increasing pace of global warming and the need for nations to strengthen efforts to reduce emissions and adapt to changing climate patterns.
