Independent Candidate Nicușor Dan Takes Oath as Romania’s New President.

In May 2025, Nicușor Daniel Dan, an independent candidate, mathematician, and former Mayor of Bucharest, was officially sworn in as the 7th President of Romania during a joint session of the Romanian Parliament held in Bucharest, the capital city.


      - He succeeded Ilie Bolojan, leader of the Centralist Liberal Party, who had been serving as the interim President of Romania since February 2025.

      - NicuČ™or Dan contested the presidential election as an independent and emerged victorious by securing 53.6% of the total votes, defeating George Simion, the leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR).

     

Main Point :-   (i) NicuČ™or Daniel Dan is a renowned mathematician who won two gold medals at the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in 1987 and 1988. Before entering politics, he was deeply involved in civic activism and public service initiatives.

      (ii) He first contested elections independently for the City Hall of Bucharest in 2012. In 2015, he co-founded the Save Bucharest Union (USB), a party advocating anti-corruption and transparency, which was later renamed Save Romania Union (USR). He was elected to the Romanian Parliament in 2016 but resigned from USR in 2017 due to ideological differences.

(iii) Nicușor Dan was elected as the Mayor of Bucharest in 2020 and re-elected for a second term in 2024, demonstrating his sustained leadership and public support in the Romanian capital.
