On May 27, 2025, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW), Government of India (GoI), approved 3 new high-yielding crop varieties and expanded the cultivation areas for three existing varieties developed by Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV), Akola (Maharashtra), to boost agricultural productivity and sustainability across India.


      - This decision was taken during the 93rd meeting of the Central Crop Variety Notification and Release Committee (CCVR-C) under MoA&FW.

      - The new approved crop varieties include AKAW 5100 Wheat, CSV 65 Yellow Sorghum (Kharif), and Super Jaki Chickpea (AKG 1402).

      - The approval aims to promote enhanced yield and sustainability in Indian agriculture by adopting these improved crop varieties.

Main Point :-   (i) The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoA&FW) has approved three new crop varieties developed by Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth (PDKV). These include AKAW 5100 Wheat, which is rust-resistant and drought-tolerant for regions like Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu; CSV 65 Yellow Sorghum, a bio-fortified kharif variety rich in zinc and iron; and Super Jaki Chickpea (AKG 1402), a high-yielding, early-maturing, machine-harvestable variety for rainfed Maharashtra.

      (ii) The ministry also approved expanding cultivation areas for three existing varieties. PDKV Amba Soybean (AMS 100-39) is now approved for Gujarat, while PDKV Purva Soybean (AMS 2014-1) has been extended to Assam, Meghalaya, and southeastern Madhya Pradesh. Both varieties are early-maturing and disease-resistant.

(iii) Additionally, the TAG 73 Groundnut variety was approved for Gujarat, known for its high pod yield and oil content. These approvals aim to boost agricultural productivity and sustainability in different regions of India.
