UGC Grants Approval for Establishing Campuses of 5 Foreign Universities in India.

In May 2025, the University Grants Commission (UGC), a statutory body under the Ministry of Education (MoE), headquartered in New Delhi, approved the establishment of campuses by five globally renowned foreign universities in India.


      - This initiative supports the vision of transforming India into a global education hub, in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

      - Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan formally handed over the Letters of Intent (LoIs) for setting up these campuses under the UGC (Setting Up and Operation of Campuses of Foreign Higher Educational Institutions in India) Regulations, 2023.

      - The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved five foreign universities to set up campuses in India between 2026 and 2027. The Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) from Chicago, USA, ranked 601-610 in QS 2025, will open its campus in Mumbai, Maharashtra, focusing on engineering, science, and technology.

Main Point :-   (i) The University of Liverpool (UoL), UK, ranked 165th globally, will start its Bengaluru, Karnataka campus, offering programs in law, business, and health sciences. Victoria University (VU), Australia, ranked 741-750, plans to open in India with a focus on practical education in business, IT, and hospitality.

      (ii) Western Sydney University (WSU), Australia, ranked 384th globally, will establish its campus in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, known for technology and research programs. Istituto Europeo di Design (IED), Milan, Italy, will bring expertise in fashion, visual arts, and communication.

(iii) Notably, the University of Southampton, UK, was the first foreign university to receive UGC approval for a campus in India, paving the way for this expansion of global education.
