World Football Day (WFD) is observed annually on May 25 by the United Nations to recognize football's global influence on peace, commerce, diplomacy, health, and gender empowerment. 2025 marks the 2nd anniversary.
- On May 7, 2024, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution A/RES/78/281, declaring May 25 as World Football Day, initiated by Bahrain, Libya, and Tajikistan, and supported by 170 nations.
- The resolution highlights the important role of FIFA and regional/national football federations in promoting football worldwide.
- May 25, 1924 marks the 100th anniversary of the Olympic Football Tournament in Paris, the first global football event. Also, on May 25, 1928, FIFA decided to create the FIFA World Cup.
Main Point :- (i) Objectives of WFD include celebrating football’s universal appeal, creating a platform for shared experiences, and supporting the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
(ii) A commemorative event was held by the UN on May 22, 2025, at the General Assembly Hall in New York, USA, to honor World Football Day.
(iii) Football Week 2025, launched by FIFA from May 21–25, carried the theme "Together, We Are Stronger", encouraging global participation to celebrate football's unifying power.
