The United Nations (UN) annually observes World Bee Day on May 20 to highlight the vital role of bees and other pollinators in preserving biodiversity, ensuring food security, and promoting sustainable development. Background:


      - Theme for 2025: “Bee inspired by nature to nourish us all”

      - This year’s theme emphasizes the essential contribution of bees and pollinators in maintaining healthy agrifood systems and ecosystems.

      - The initiative to establish World Bee Day was led by the Republic of Slovenia, with support from Apimondia (International Federation of Beekeepers’ Associations), and was first proposed during the FAO Regional Conference for Europe held in Rome, Italy in 2016.

Main Point :-   (i) On 20 December 2017, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted resolution A/RES/72/211, officially declaring May 20 as World Bee Day each year.

      (ii) The date was chosen to commemorate the birth anniversary of Anton Janša, an 18th-century Slovenian pioneer of modern beekeeping (apiculture).

(iii) The first World Bee Day was celebrated on 20 May 2018.
