Denmark Opens World's First Commercial-Scale E-Methanol Plant.

International

In May 2025, the world’s first commercial-scale e-methanol (electrolyzed methanol) plant commenced operations in Kasso, Southern Denmark, marking a significant advancement in greener shipping and climate change mitigation.

      - The plant is a joint venture between Denmark-based European Energy A/S and Japan-based Mitsui & Co., Ltd., with an investment of approximately 150 million euros (USD 167 million).

      - It is designed to produce 42,000 Metric Tons (MT) or 53 million litres of e-methanol annually.

Main Point :-   (i) The facility harnesses renewable energy from the nearby 304 Megawatt (MW) Kasso Solar Park, which is Northern Europe’s largest solar power installation.

(ii) The production process combines green hydrogen—generated through solar-powered electrolysis—with biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) sourced from biogas plants and waste incineration.

(iii) This innovative approach results in e-methanol with up to a 97% reduction in carbon footprint compared to traditional fossil-based methanol. The project supports the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) ambitious goal to eliminate carbon emissions from shipping by 2050.
