Coinbase Becomes First Cryptocurrency Exchange to Join S&P 500 Index in the USA.

In May 2025, Coinbase Global Inc. (COIN), headquartered in California, USA, became the first cryptocurrency exchange to be included in the New York-based Standard & Poor’s 500 (S&P 500) Index.


      - Coinbase replaced Illinois-based Discover Financial Services (DFS) in the S&P 500 following DFS’s acquisition by Capital One Financial Corporation (COF), based in Virginia, USA.

     

     

Main Point :-   (i) The S&P 500 Index tracks 500 leading companies and represents 90% of the U.S. equity market capitalization, making Coinbase’s inclusion a major milestone in the mainstream acceptance of digital assets.

      (ii) Coinbase’s entry into the index coincided with Bitcoin (BTC-USD) crossing the USD 100,000 mark, driven by pro-crypto policies under U.S. President Donald Trump.
