India Takes Part in 24th IORA Meeting Virtually Hosted by Sri Lankan Government.

On May 21, 2025, India took part in the 24th meeting of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) Council of Ministers (COM), which was virtually hosted by the current IORA Chair, Sri Lanka. The event was held under the theme "Sustainable Indian Ocean for Future Generation."


      - The Indian delegation was led by Periasamy Kumaran, Secretary (East), Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

      - India, currently serving as the Vice-Chair of IORA and a member of the Troika, is set to assume the IORA Chairship for 2025–2027, taking over from Sri Lanka.

     

Main Point :-   (i) The ministers adopted IORA Guidelines on Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, reinforcing regional efforts to manage marine resources.

      (ii) The meeting endorsed IORA’s climate agenda, focusing on sustainable development in the Indian Ocean region.

(iii) A major outcome of the session was the adoption of the Colombo Communique, summarizing the progress made since the last COM in 2023.
