In May 2025, Airports Council International (ACI) World, based in Montreal, Canada, published the list of the Top 10 Busiest Airports by Passenger Traffic for 2024–25. According to the report, New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) secured the 9th position globally, with a total passenger traffic of 77,820,834, making it the busiest airport in India.


      - The top position in the global rankings was claimed by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) in the United States. ATL handled the highest number of passengers worldwide in the 2024–25 period, maintaining its leading status.

      - Passenger traffic worldwide is projected to hit 9.9 billion in 2025, showing a robust 4.8% year-over-year (YoY) growth. This reflects a strong recovery and expansion in the global aviation industry.

      - The United States continues to lead in global air travel, with five of the top ten busiest airports located within the country. This highlights the USA's key role in shaping global passenger movement.

Main Point :-   (i) Indira Gandhi International Airport ranks third among Asia’s busiest airports, following Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Tokyo Haneda International Airport (HND). IGIA’s performance signifies India’s growing importance in global aviation.

      (ii) As of 2024, IGIA has overtaken Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM), which had 52,820,754 passengers, securing its place as the busiest airport in India.

(iii) Apart from being one of the busiest airports, IGIA was also recognized as the Best Airport in India and South Asia in the 2025 Skytrax Best Airport Rankings. This acknowledgment highlights its high service standards and operational excellence.
