On May 19, 2025, the BRICS Energy Ministers' Meeting 2025 convened in BrasĂlia, Brazil, under the theme "Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance." The event was held under Brazil's BRICS presidency.
- The meeting focused on fostering collaboration among BRICS nations—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—to promote sustainable and inclusive energy governance.
- The Indian delegation was led by Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, who oversees the Ministry of Power (MoP) and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
- The meeting emphasized accelerating clean energy transitions, enhancing energy security, and promoting technology sharing among BRICS countries to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and combat climate change effectively.
Main Point :- (i) During the meeting, Minister Khattar reaffirmed India’s commitment to a sustainable energy future aligned with global climate targets.
(ii) India reported achieving 475 Gigawatts (GW) of electricity generation capacity in 2025, a 90% increase over the last decade, with a goal to reach 900 GW by 2032.
(iii) India invited BRICS members to the 2026 BRICS Energy Gathering, to be hosted by India, underscoring its leadership in advancing the energy agenda for the Global South.
