International Museum Day (IMD) is celebrated globally every year on May 18, spearheaded by the International Council of Museums (ICOM), to underscore the importance of museums in fostering cultural exchange, enhancing mutual understanding, and promoting cooperation and peace worldwide.


      - Theme for 2025: "The Future of Museums in Rapidly Changing Communities".

     

     

Main Point :-   (i) Established in 1977, IMD was officially launched through a resolution passed during the ICOM General Assembly held in Moscow, Russia.

      (ii) Since then, it has served as a unified platform for museums globally to showcase their contributions to social and cultural development.

(iii) The tradition of assigning a specific annual theme began in 1992, and ICOM introduced an official poster for the day in 1997 to further amplify global awareness.
