India and Maldives Sign 13 MoUs for Development Projects under Indian Grant Assistance.

In May 2025, the Government of India (GoI) signed 13 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with the Government of Maldives aimed at enhancing ferry services across the island nation.


      - The agreements include a grant of Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) 100 million (approximately Rs. 55.3 crore) from India to boost maritime connectivity and improve community livelihoods in the Maldives.

      - The MoUs were signed in MalĂ©, Maldives, by Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Maldives, and G Balasubramanian, India’s High Commissioner to the Maldives. Mohamed Ameen, Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation, signed on behalf of the implementing agency.

     

Main Point :-   (i) The 13 MoUs were signed for projects under Phase III of the High Impact Community Development Project (HICDP), supported by Indian grant assistance, announced during Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu’s visit to India in October 2024.

      (ii) These projects focus on improving ferry services, expanding maritime connectivity, and uplifting community livelihoods across the Maldives.

(iii) Originally scheduled for completion in 2027, the projects are now expected to be completed by the end of 2025, reflecting India’s strong commitment to the Maldives’ socio-economic development.
