Government of India Declares September 23 as Ayurveda Day.

National

In May 2025, the Government of India (GOI) officially declared September 23 as Ayurveda Day to be celebrated annually. This decision aims to provide a consistent date and enhance the global recognition of Ayurveda Day.

      - September 23 coincides with the autumnal equinox, a day when day and night are equal. This astronomical event symbolizes balance in nature, which aligns with the core Ayurvedic philosophy of maintaining equilibrium between the mind, body, and spirit.

      - Previously, Ayurveda Day was observed on Dhanteras, a festival celebrated in the Hindu lunar month of Karthik (usually falling in October or November). However, the date of Dhanteras varies every year, leading to inconsistency in the observance of Ayurveda Day.

Main Point :-   (i) This fluctuation, ranging between October 15 and November 12 over the coming decade, created logistical challenges in organizing national and international events.

(ii) To address this, the Ministry of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy) formed a committee to recommend a fixed and alternative date for Ayurveda Day.
