President Droupadi Murmu Appoints Justice Surya Kant as Executive Chairman of NALSA.

Appointment

In May 2025, President of India Droupadi Murmu appointed Supreme Court (SC) Judge, Justice Surya Kant, as the Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA), with effect from May 14, 2025.


      - He takes over the role from Justice B. R. Gavai, another sitting Judge of the Supreme Court of India.

      - Justice Surya Kant currently holds the position of Chairman of the Supreme Court Legal Services Committee (SCLSC).

      - Prior to his appointment to the apex court in May 2019, he served as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and was also a judge in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Main Point :-   (i) As Executive Chairman of NALSA, he will spearhead efforts to ensure free and equitable legal services for citizens, especially those from underprivileged and economically weaker communities across the nation.

      (ii) NALSA is a statutory institutin created under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, and became operational on November 9, 1995, to promote access to justice for all.
