Dr. Ajay Kumar, Former Defence Secretary, Appointed as UPSC Chairman.

Appointment

In May 2025, the Government of India (GoI) appointed Dr. Ajay Kumar, former Defence Secretary, Ministry of Defence (MoD), and a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1985 Kerala cadre, as the new Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). His tenure will be for six years or until he reaches the age of 65, whichever is earlier.


      - The appointment was approved by the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, under Article 316(1) of the Constitution of India, according to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions (MoPP&P).

      - He succeeded Preeti Sudan, whose tenure ended on 29th April 2025.

     

Main Point :-   (i) The UPSC is responsible for conducting civil services examinations to recruit officers for prestigious posts such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and Indian Police Service (IPS).

      (ii) The commission is headed by a Chairman and can have a maximum of 10 members.
