IWAI Sets Up New Office in Srinagar to Boost River Navigation Infrastructure in Jammu & Kashmir.

In May 2025, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), headquartered in Noida, Uttar Pradesh (UP) under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW), established a new regional office at Transport Bhawan in Srinagar, Union Territory (UT) of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K).


      - This development marks a significant step toward enhancing the Inland Water Transport (IWT) infrastructure in the region.

      - The office, made operational on May 13, 2025, was set up with support from the J&K government, which provided the necessary space.

     

Main Point :-   (i) The new office will serve as IWAI’s central hub in J&K, tasked with monitoring and facilitating the development of river navigation systems across the UT.

      (ii) Earlier in March 2025, IWAI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the J&K government to develop inland waterway infrastructure across three National Waterways (NWs): NW-26 (River Chenab), NW-49 (River Jhelum), and NW-84 (River Ravi).
