Books & Authors

In May 2025, Kaunain Sheriff M, National Health Editor at The Indian Express, released his book "The Johnson & Johnson Files: The Indian Secrets of a Global Giant", a comprehensive investigation into one of India's significant medical device controversies.

      - Published by New Delhi-based Juggernaut Books, the book delves into the Articular Surface Replacement (ASR) hip implant scandal involving the USA-based pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson (J&J).

      - In 2003, J&J's subsidiary, DePuy Orthopaedics, introduced the ASR hip implants, marketed for their durability. By 2010, the implants were globally recalled due to high failure rates and metal toxicity. However, approximately 4,700 Indian patients had already received them, unaware of the risks.

Main Point :-   (i) Kaunain Sheriff’s book builds upon investigative reports published by The Indian Express in 2018-2019, uncovering how corporate negligence and regulatory oversights compromised patient safety.

(ii) The narrative highlights the long battle of Indian patients for justice and compensation, contrasting it with the USD 2.5 billion settlement Johnson & Johnson provided in the USA.
