Indian Railways & DMRC Sign MoU to Implement Automatic Wheel Profile Measurement Systems (AWPMS).

MOUs and Agreement

In April 2025, Indian Railways (IR), under the Ministry of Railways (MoR), and the Delhi-based Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the procurement and installation of Automatic Wheel Profile Measurement Systems (AWPMS) at Rail Bhawan, New Delhi.

      - This collaboration aims to boost automation and efficiency in rolling stock maintenance, thereby enhancing operational safety.

      - This initiative supports IR’s broader objectives under the Mission Raftar and Kavach schemes to ensure faster and safer rail transport. As per the agreement, DMRC will handle the procurement, supply, installation, and commissioning of four AWPMS units for Indian Railways.

      - This marks a key step in the modernization of maintenance systems and rolling stock management across the Indian railway network.

Main Point :-   (i) AWPMS is a state-of-the-art, automated system that uses laser scanners and high-speed cameras to perform non-contact measurement of train wheel profiles.

(ii) It facilitates real-time tracking of wheel geometry and wear, reducing reliance on manual inspections. The system also generates automated alerts in case of deviations, enabling swift corrective action to improve safety and efficiency.
