Obituary

In April 2025, Lieutenant General Sundararajan Pattabhiraman, former Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) and Colonel Commandant of the Bombay Sappers, passed away at the Military Hospital in Wellington, Nilgiris District, Tamil Nadu (TN) at the age of 78. He was born in 1946 and had a distinguished military career spanning 40 years, during which he held numerous pivotal leadership roles.


     

     

     

Main Point :-   (i) Lt Gen Pattabhiraman was commissioned into the Corps of Engineers, specifically the Bombay Sappers, one of the oldest and most decorated regiments of the Indian Army (IA).

      (ii) He served as the first Director General (DG) of Information Systems of the Indian Army and as the Army Commander of the Western Command, the largest operational command in the IA.

(iii) He served as the Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS) from 2005 until his retirement in December 2006, contributing significantly to modernization and operational strategy in the Indian Army.
