World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is observed every year on May 8 to recognize and honor the humanitarian efforts and principles of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The day also raises awareness of the importance of humanitarian aid and community support during crises.
- The 2025 theme is "Keeping Humanity Alive", emphasizing the commitment to compassion, relief work, and solidarity in times of need.
Main Point :- (i) The movement is guided by seven fundamental principles: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity, and Universality.
(ii) This day also marks the birth anniversary of Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the first Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
(iii) The first International Red Cross Day was celebrated on May 8, 1948, and it has since evolved into a global observance under the name World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.
