Former ISRO Chief and Padma Awardee K. Kasturirangan Passes Away Recently.

Obituary

On 26th April 2025, Dr. Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan, former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Padma awardee, passed away recently at the age of 84 in Bengaluru, Karnataka. He was born on 24th October 1940 in Ernakulam, Kerala.


      - Dr. Krishnaswamy Kasturirangan began his professional career in space science in 1969 as a researcher at the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. His early research laid a strong foundation for his future contributions to India's space journey.

      - He served as the Chairman of ISRO from 1994 to 2003. During his tenure, he oversaw the successful development and launch of the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) and the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV), and initiated India's planetary exploration efforts, which eventually led to the Chandrayaan-1 mission.

     

Main Point :-   (i) For his immense contributions to the field of science and engineering, he was honoured with several of India’s highest civilian awards: Padma Shri in 1982 (India's fourth-highest civilian award), Padma Bhushan in 1992 (India's third-highest civilian award), and Padma Vibhushan in 2000 (India's second-highest civilian award).

      (ii) Dr. Kasturirangan's legacy continues to inspire generations of scientists and researchers, leaving an indelible mark on India's advancements in space exploration and technology.
