The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, has propelled India’s aviation sector into a new era of growth, modernization, and global alignment.
- This reflects the emergence of a robust aviation ecosystem, firmly aligned with the Government of India (GoI)’s mission of becoming a developed nation by 2047, under the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
- Protection of Interest in Aircraft Objects Bill, 2025: Passed by both Houses of Parliament in April 2025, this landmark legislation aligns India’s aircraft leasing and financing regime with global norms under the Cape Town Convention, 2001. It strengthens the legal framework to boost investor confidence in India’s aviation finance sector.
- Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024: Replacing the colonial-era Aircraft Act of 1934, this progressive legislation was passed in 2024 and came into force on January 01, 2025. It marks a major leap in regulatory modernization and streamlining of India’s aviation governance structure.
Main Point :- (i) The Government of India (GoI) has laid the foundation stones for new terminal buildings at strategically important locations including Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Agra (Uttar Pradesh), Darbhanga (Bihar), and Bagdogra (West Bengal).
(ii) Since 2014, out of 21 ‘in-principle’ approved projects, 12 Greenfield Airports have been operationalised, reinforcing regional connectivity and infrastructure expansion.
(iii) India witnessed a dramatic surge in domestic air travel, with 22 crore 81 lakh passengers in 2024, more than double the 10 crore 38 lakh passengers recorded over the 65-year period before 2014, highlighting the democratization of air travel across the country.
