Important Days

In April 2025, the United Nations (UN) observes International Mother Earth Day, or Earth Day, on April 22 to highlight the interdependence between humans and the Earth’s ecosystems. This observance stresses the collective responsibility to promote harmony with nature, balancing economic, social, and environmental needs for the present and future generations.

      - Earth Day 2025 holds special significance as it aligns with the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a global initiative aimed at combating environmental degradation. The theme for Earth Day 2025 is "Our Power, Our Planet."

      - Establishment: Officially recognized in 2009 through UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/63/278, introduced by Bolivia and supported by more than 50 member states.

Main Point :-   (i) The first official observance of the UN's International Mother Earth Day occurred on April 22, 2009.

(ii) Earth Day was first proposed by American peace activist John McConnell during a 1969 UNESCO conference held in San Francisco, United States of America (USA). His vision aimed to dedicate a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace. This idea laid the foundation for what would become a global environmental awareness movement.

(iii) The inaugural Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, and is recognized as the beginning of the modern environmental movement. In 2025, the world marks the 55th anniversary of Earth Day, reaffirming its long-standing commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.
