In April 2025, Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, passed away at the age of 88 in Vatican City. Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he was the first non-European pope in over 1,000 years and the first Jesuit pope.


      - He also became the first to adopt the name Francis, in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi.

      - He was ordained a Jesuit priest in 1969 and later served as the Provincial Superior of the Jesuits in Argentina from 1973 to 1979.

     

Main Point :-   (i) In 1992, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Buenos Aires and became Archbishop in 1998. He was elevated to the rank of cardinal by Pope John Paul II in 2001.

      (ii) In 2013, following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, he was elected Pope at the age of 76.

(iii) As Pope, he introduced several Vatican reforms, promoting transparency, financial accountability, and inclusivity. He was known for appointing diverse leaders to high-ranking roles within the Church.
