IISR Unveils New Light-Colored Turmeric Variety 'IISR Surya'.

In April 2025, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR)-Indian Institute of Spices Research (IISR), based in Kozhikode (Kerala), developed a new light-coloured turmeric variety named 'IISR Surya'. This new variety features a light-coloured rhizome designed to meet the specific requirements of the modern powdering (masala) industry.


      - The new variety has a pleasant aroma, expected to benefit farmers significantly, particularly in the production of high-quality turmeric powder.

      - It is a high-yielding variety of turmeric, offering a 20% to 30% increase in yield compared to existing light-coloured local varieties. It can yield up to a maximum of 41 tonnes per hectare.

     

Main Point :-   The turmeric contains curcumin content in the range of 2% to 3%, on par with other light-coloured turmeric varieties.
